Portland Yacht Club Race Series

The 2008 Portland Yacht Club Race Series consists of four main events; the Pilot Regatta, the PHRF State of Maine Championships & One Design Regatta, the Monhegan Island Race, and the Fall Series which includes the popular Lightship Race.  Fun and informal, non-scored, Thursday night races are also run every week starting May 22nd and continuing through September 18th.

The 2008 Portland Yacht Club Race Series will not be scored as a complete event however there will be a Series Champion named at the end of the season.  The winning boat, selected by the PYC Race Committee, will be chosen based on race results, participation, level of competition, and sportsmanship.

PYC Race and Monhegan Committee will be meeting once a month. Please email PYC Race Officer, Bill Newberry if you are interested in joining the committee, helping with an event, or signing up to help on the committee boat. No race experience is required!!!

2007 PYC/Stirrings Race Series Results

Scott Smithwick, skippering his Frers 41 "Kaos", finished third in Class A  in the final fall series event, clinched first overall in class A for last year's PYC Fall Series.  "Kaos" proved to be the most consistent finisher in all the 2007 PYC Events winning the first annual 2007 PYC/Stirrings Race Series Prize.  The Prize was a Limousine ride in a stretched SUV Limo to the Annual Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association Awards Ceremony in October, as well as Stirrings, Cold River Vodka and Mount Gay Rum products for a cocktail party for the winning crew.

The Lippoth Trophy, awarded to the best performing PYC member boat in the Fall Series, was awarded to Keemah a J105 owned by Don Logan.  Keemah and crew finished an impressive first all three days of racing in class B and finished fourth overall in the Lightship Race.

The conditions for the final Fall Series Race were North winds at 20 to 27 knots; certainly a perfect way to cap off the 2007 season.  Some boats reported sailing at over 14 knots downwind with spinnakers up.   If you missed last year's PYC Fall Series, be sure not to miss the some of the best sailing all season in 2008.
